“If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door.” ― Harvey Milk Thirty-Four years ago tonight, The White Night riots were sparked in San Francisco by an announcement of the lenient sentencing of Dan White, for the assassinations of San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone. The event took place on the eve of what would have been Harvey Milk’s 49th birthday. Earlier that day, White had been convicted of voluntary manslaughter, the lightest possible conviction for his actions. Dan White said eating too many Twinkies caused him to murder Milk and Moscone. The court thought it was a reasonable excuse. Several hours after the riot had been broken up, police made a retaliatory raid on a gay bar in San Francisco’s Castro District. Patrons were beaten by police in riot gear. Two dozen arrests were made during the course of the raid. In the following days, LGBT leaders refused to apologize for the events of that night. This led to increased political power in the LGBT community.
